Double Indemnity - Analysis

Double Indemnity (1944) , Directed by Billy Wilder.
  • Enigma: unanswered questions - who is the shadowy figure? How did he get disabled?
  • Music: menacing.
  • Mise-en-scene: opening credits - shadowy figure coming towards the screen, enveloping the whole frame - unsettling.
  • Characters: clear example of the seductive yet deadly femme fatale, manipulating the anti-hero.
  • Camera: introduction of Phyllis - low angles as she stands at the top of the staircase, positioned higher than Walter.  Pan up, close-ups of her feet/hands/face - male gaze, seductive.
  • Narrative: Wilder makes a minor character interrupt the pair's meetings eg. shopper walking past them - disturbs atmosphere and creates tension, will they be found out? Also, contrast between drama and mundane.
